Long Island Solar Heating House Answers to Long Island Conventional Homes back to home page

The picture to the left is a typical home on Long Island depicting the heat loss from conventional building methods, low green criteria, low R factor materials, and outdated technology compared to green building design today.

This winter rent an infrared video or still camera and ride around any neighborhood in Long Island on a pitch dark night when the temperature is 17 degrees Fahrenheit. Look at homes built in the 1920s to brand new homes just constructed; the economic makeup of the neighborhood is irrelevant.  What we're looking for are past and present results to residential building practices and R factor, heat retention and heat loss in residential Long Island housing. Make sure to ride through affluent neighborhoods, you'll see the same results.

We cannot tell you how many homes we've gone into and there was no insulation between the roof rafters in the attic; under these circumstances, these roofs are the highest point of heat loss in a home, except for windows and doors that have low R factors. A window with an R factor of 9 is not bad; a window with an R factor of 15 is better. a wall with an R factor of 15 is nothing, R factor of 30 for the wall is a little better, green is 85% R factor for the wall and 100% R factor for the ceiling/roof. The R Factor for windows in a green constructed home is between 15 and 45 R Factor and a there are a couple ways to achieve this in green building design.
